Organizes Time, Space, Interaction
Students are asked to sit quietly in their seats and give their utmost focus to whatever subject they are expected to focus on for fifty seven minutes each day. Therefore, whenever there is an opportunity to get up, move, or incorporate technology, students tend to give higher levels of engagement.
Trench Warfare Lesson
The Trench Warfare Lesson focused on the experiences of the soldiers in All Quiet on the Western Front was an exciting break from the groups of tables students usually sit at. Students preceded the lesson with a short informative powerpoint on WWI, and then began and interactive reading of passages from the novel, including 'shellings' and 'gas attacks'. The classroom was reorganized to create two opposing sides engaged in table-trench warfare in order to simulate the real experiences of the characters of Remarque's piece and allow students to connect their own experience with the text.

Kahoot: Interaction with Technology, Text and Peers
Kahoot is an online resource where teachers can create games on their computers and project the questions to the whole class. Students can then participate with just about any device; laptop, phone, tablet, etc. Kahoot keeps students engaged and competitive, as it allots points for speed and correctness and after every question the is a top five leader board. Also, the program puts a thirty second timer on each question, so there is very little time for students to disengage from the lesson. Students often discuss questions with each other, pull out notes and resources, and take charge of their own learning.

Daily Classroom Rules and Organization
Daily classroom rules include a ten minute period at the beginning of class where students journal. This journal is often used as a bell ringer or to get students into 'English mode'. Usually there is a online classroom timer or a song that lasts ten minutes projected along with the prompt and the lights remain off.
Students also know that if they can't see, we are discussing or working in groups they are allowed to move and sit anywhere so long as they are focused, responsible and safe. They often sit on the counters or on the rug in front of class.
Lastly, the projector and white boards are in locations where most students can see and are used almost every day. Student work is hung around the room and is changed depending on what the class is focusing on for the unit
